Arvada Family Portraits in the Midday Shade
For years, I have held the belief that the most beautiful family portraits are captured during the golden hours—either shortly after sunrise or before sunset. This timing allows for softer, warmer lighting, which results in reduced shadows, smoother skin, and a more inviting color palette.
However, after becoming a parent of two young children, I quickly realized that not all families can adhere to these ideal times. Embracing this challenge, I focused on perfecting midday family portraits, accommodating nap schedules and busy routines.
I meticulously researched nearby locations, ensuring they met several criteria: within a 10-minute drive from home, an easy walk from the car, fully shaded for both the portrait and background, and not crowded with people. I discovered a suitable park in Arvada that met these requirements. Despite the time being 4 PM—when harsh sunlight could be a concern—the shaded park provided an optimal environment for capturing family portraits. The proximity to a playground did present a challenge, as maintaining a 3-year-old's attention proved difficult.
For our photo session, my wife wore a flowing dress, while I opted for a classic, solid-color button-up shirt. We chose muted tones to align with my photographic style, enhancing the portrait without overpowering the subjects. I believe that intentional clothing choices should highlight the individuals in the photograph and complement the overall color scheme.
With over a decade of experience in portrait photography, I have developed a preference for subtle, natural colors. These tones not only enhance skin tones but also blend harmoniously with home decor, wall colors, and frame choices. My goal is for each family portrait to be a timeless piece that seamlessly integrates into your home, bringing ongoing joy. My session fees are designed to be professional & affordable, encouraging families to update their portraits every year or two.
Following our session, we enjoyed a relaxing stop at Luki Brewery for a happy hour pint before heading home for dinner. I recommend families to make their portrait session special by planning a celebratory activity, such as a meal or treat, to enhance the experience and create lasting memories.
I am excited to announce that I am considering offering family portrait mini-sessions next month. These sessions will be perfect for families with children, providing a convenient way to capture beautiful, shaded portraits without the stress of evening routines. There are many parks in the Denver metro area that offer excellent shaded locations, and I look forward to exploring these new opportunities in photography.
