Denver Headshots the Red Rocks Way

As a photographer, I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting locations to create memorable and professional headshots. Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to work with an organization that services all of the food and beverage needs at Red Rocks Amphitheatre—one of the most iconic venues in the world. This unique collaboration allowed me to capture professional headshots against the stunning backdrop of the famous Red Rocks formations, and the experience was one I won’t forget.

I’ll walk you through the headshot shoot at Red Rocks, including how we made the most of the venue’s unique environment, the lighting techniques I used, and why Red Rocks is such a fantastic location for headshots. If you’re considering professional headshots for your team, especially in the Denver metro area, read on to learn more about how I can help.

Choosing the Perfect Location at Red Rocks

Red Rocks Amphitheatre is renowned for its dramatic red rock formations, sweeping views, and natural acoustics. When planning the headshot shoot, we took a walk around the venue to scout out ideal locations that would not only showcase the beauty of the venue but also provide the right lighting and background for professional portraits.

After considering several spots, we decided on a shaded area near the middle of the amphitheater’s stairs. This location provided an elevated view of the venue while offering the perfect balance of natural light and shade. The natural stone backdrop and sweeping curves of the amphitheater made for a striking and unique setting, without taking attention away from the individuals being photographed.

Using Light to Enhance the Headshot

Lighting is key to any successful headshot. Whether you're shooting indoors or outdoors, the way light interacts with your subject will make or break the final image. I always bring my trusty small light setup with me to outdoor shoots, and this session at Red Rocks was no exception.

For this shoot, we set up a small fill light that helped brighten faces and create an even light distribution, counteracting any harsh shadows from the natural light. The soft, diffused fill light balanced out the lighting on everyone’s face, resulting in a more flattering image overall.

This technique serves multiple purposes:

  • Softer Skin Tones: The light softens the appearance of skin, minimizing blemishes and imperfections.

  • Balanced Lighting: It helps even out any harsh contrasts created by direct sunlight, resulting in more natural and complementary skin tones.

  • Brightening Eyes: In headshots, the eyes are the focal point, and a good lighting setup helps make them pop, giving the photo a vibrant, engaging look.

One of the reasons I enjoy bringing a small light setup to outdoor shoots is that it gives me control over the final image, even when working in unpredictable natural lighting. This helps ensure the headshot looks polished and professional, no matter the time of day or weather conditions.

Real-Time Feedback with Immediate Image Viewing

An essential part of any professional photoshoot is client satisfaction. During the Red Rocks headshot session, I made sure to show each person their images immediately after capturing the shot. I used my iPad to display the photos, so everyone could see the results and provide feedback on the spot.

This is a great way to ensure that everyone is happy with their headshot and allows for minor tweaks right away. Whether it’s adjusting a pose, changing the lighting slightly, or just checking that the expression looks perfect, I want my clients to feel confident in their photos. This personalized approach helps build trust and ensures that everyone is happy with the final result.

Wrapping Up the Shoot: A Successful Day at Red Rocks

Within just a few hours, we were able to photograph the entire staff, and by the end of the shoot, everyone had a headshot they were excited about. The relaxed atmosphere of Red Rocks, combined with my quick and efficient process, made the session go smoothly.

As a photographer, I thrive on new challenges and locations, and working at Red Rocks was an incredible experience. The natural beauty of the venue added an extra layer of uniqueness to the headshots, and the staff were a joy to work with. It’s a testament to how the right location, combined with good planning and lighting techniques, can elevate the final product.
